内容 | 【The 3rd Lecture】 Doctors, Police Officers or Walking ATMs?: The Constituency Roles of Members of Parliament in Tanzania Speaker; Dr. Tsubura Machiko Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) How do Members of Parliament (MPs) and voters interact with each other in sub-Saharan Africa? What kinds of role do African MPs play in their constituencies? How do African voters decide who to vote for in elections? In this seminar, I will address these questions in the case of Tanzania based on the interviews with MPs and other key informants, supplemented by the Afrobarometer survey analysis. I will discuss the clientelistic relationship between MPs and voters embedded in their society, and MPs' benefactor role. By examining the Tanzanian case, I hope we can reflect on the roles of MPs in promoting local development in Africa and other developing regions. |
